Ways to Make Your Caring Count

By: Darlene Golson, Grant Writer & Program Development

2019 Is here!  A new year, a new blank page for all of us. Do you want to be kinder, do more, and be more? At New Horizons Disability Empowerment Center, we have plans to provide new programs and to expand current programs in 2019!  With your help, our plans and goals will be that much closer to being achieved. It is not too late to donate to our #GivingTuesday Campaign that ends on January 11, 2019. Go to Giving Tuesday & Beyond to make your gift.  Our goal is $3,000 and because of your generosity, we have raised $1,348.  Only $1,652 left to go!

Don’t forget you can always give to new Horizons through Amazon Smile and the Fry’s Community Rewards Program. It is as simple as  choosing NHDEC as your charity and then shop your heart out! Tax time is almost here!  Did you know that Arizona taxpayers might also claim a tax credit for cash donations made to qualifying charitable organizations?

Happy New Year from all of us at New Horizons Disability Empowerment Center!  Be sure to check out the highlights of 2018 in the video below.

We wish you a year filled with health and happiness  in 2019!

Year End Call to Action

By Darlene Golson, Program Development / Grant Writer

It is hard to believe the end of another year is quickly approaching. It is the time of year that many of us give thanks for the many blessings and opportunities we have had.  It’s also a time of giving and sharing with others.

Our mission at New Horizons Disability Empowerment Center is to assist people with any disability across Northern Arizona to live the most independent, self-directed life possible. We are so thankful to have had the ability to provide quality services since 1992 and we look forward to being able to improve and expand on our existing programs and services.

Your end of the year donation will help us to continue to provide services to people like Aziza Austin.  Aziza was one of the many people diagnosed with polio during the outbreak in the 1950’s and 1960’s.  She has been living with polio since the age of six and has a fused left knee and a weak right leg that makes mobility a challenge.

Aziza was referred to New Horizons Disability Empowerment Center by a friend six years ago and has  been utilizing our transportation service since. She is extremely thankful as it allows her to remain as independent as possible in her community.  Her life has not been easy; however, Aziza believes that everyone can conquer anything as long as we are determined.  She believes that we can all use our minds and hearts to help others.

As we enter the holiday season, we ask you to take Aziza’s words to heart, “New Horizons Disability Empowerment Center gives hope for those who may need encouragement through life’s long journey.”  Please help us to continue to encourage and empower those with disabilities.

Finally we would like to leave you with Aziza’s heartfelt words, “May peace and good health be with you always!”

Remembering Our Friend Mildred

I wish I could introduce all of you to our friend Mildred.  She was a bright spirit, always with a smile.  Mildred was a client, as well as a devoted volunteer who was always willing to help New Horizons in any way we needed.   While on occasion she might make a monetary donation, she was not a woman of financial wealth, although she was rich in good friends and spent much of her time doing things for others.

In the past year, Mildred passed from this world.  While we were all deeply saddened by this loss, she left us something to remember her by.  When Mildred passed, we found that she had remembered New Horizons Disability Empowerment Center in her estate plan and left a portion of her estate to New Horizons and another local charity.

What a wonderful way to make an impact that lasts for generations.  Again, Mildred was not wealthy by any account, however once her estate is settled, and the monies come to NHDEC, we plan to create a special fund in her honor.  A memorial fund that will continue to help others in her name, for many years.  I would like to hold Mildred up as an example of how a little forethought can make a BIG difference.  Just consider the MANY ways you can give your final gift to the world.  Please consider having an estate plan that would include New Horizons DisAbility Empowerment Center here in Prescott Valley, as a recipient.   If you have questions, please give me a call at New Horizons and I will personally talk you through a couple options.
